The original prospectus asked for a theme of "on the move"

I held the workshop with the children attending the school adjacent to the SEPTA station at 63rd and Market Streets. I told them to draw people as they would draw a star or a flower as it were jumping or running. I think they did a great job creating movement and character, I simplified the drawings in photoshop and created the silhouettes for the compositions.

So here is Scott, my project manager from Amuneal, up on the ladder while I advise him on placement.

I decided the best way to make sure the blind (not seen from front) hardware would go into the mortar of the brick was to create a template and mark in person where the final hardware needed to be welded. Because the pieces are finished with a powder- coated process ( a thermoplastic) they can not be corrected once the coating is on, welding would destroy the surface. Also the template can then be used to drill the holes and will match exactly where the attachments were welded.

It was wonderful to see renditions of the pieces to the scale they are going to be. This piece combines the images made by children in one of the workshops I held. I will add those images in a process blog about the piece. There will be a placard with their names and the silhouettes of their initial drawings.

COBB'S CREEK CONSTELLATION laser cut pieces for outdoor staircases

The pieces above are enlarged silhouettes of drawings that children from the Cobb's Creek neighborhood made in two workshops I held where children were asked to create self portraits of themselves as stars and flowers. The pieces above were laser cut and are being fabricated by Amuneal in North Philadelphia. These pieces are a few of many that will be all over the outdoor staircases,

There will be an additional eight composited pieces for the main area of the station. MORE COMING SOON!!!

The piece for SEPTA is in the process of being fabricated by Amuneal Manufacturing Corporation

They will be laser cutting the pieces this week and next. I will get some pictures of the process!
